Sino-EU Partnership Bears Fruit: ABB's Microgrid in Xiamen Wins Nod as Replicable Model for Corporate Decarbonization
The groundbreaking green microgrid at the ABB Industrial Center in Xiamen has been officially endorsed as a premier case study for international energy cooperation. Selected among the first cohort of Sino-European Energy Cooperation (typical cases), the project is hailed for providing a critical implementation pathway for corporate green, low-carbon transformation, boasting both widespread replicability and a compelling return on investment.
The recognition, conferred under the guidance of China's National Energy Administration, is strategically timed with the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations. The joint initiative by the Sino-European Energy Technology Innovation Cooperation Office and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China is designed to cement energy partnerships, create blueprints for success, and drive the commercialization of innovative technologies that benefit both regions and the global climate agenda.
This project transcends a typical sustainability upgrade. It is the result of a powerful collaboration between ABB China and the local Xiamen Torch New Source Power Technology Co., Ltd., effectively merging ABB's global expertise in energy management with the ambitious build-out of China's new power system. The partnership has created a "co-development, shared-outcome" model that demonstrates how European technology and Chinese implementation can jointly create tangible, low-carbon industrial solutions.
Its new status as a model case means the project's framework will be actively promoted within Sino-EU green technology circles. It provides a clear roadmap for other multinational companies seeking to green their local operations in China and paves the way for expanded collaboration in high-growth areas like virtual power plants (VPPs) and AI-driven carbon management platforms.
Echoing the significance of collaborative innovation, Luo Hui, Head of ABB Electrical Distribution Systems China, stated, "The selection of this project highlights a shared Sino-European resolve for a sustainable future. We have moved beyond theory to prove the technical and economic viability of industrial microgrids. By integrating (smart manufacturing) with (green manufacturing), we have created a benchmark that we are eager to see replicated to support broader national 'Dual Carbon' objectives."
Designated as a "Zero Emission Vision" flagship site for ABB globally, the Xiamen center showcases four practical applications: a fully realized low-carbon park, demand-side response capabilities, a 5G-enabled smart grid, and a functional AC/DC microgrid. The core of the system is ABB's proprietary smart energy management, which leverages AI for predictive generation and load forecasting, allowing for precise, flexible control that slashes energy waste. This has culminated in a staggering annual reduction of 13,400 tons of CO2, proving that environmental and operational excellence can go hand-in-hand. With a second-phase expansion for additional solar capacity planned for late 2025, the site continues to evolve as a living laboratory for industrial decarbonization.
